What is Physical Therapy?
If you are suffering from muscle and / or joint pain from a recent or old injury such as a car accident or after surgery – you might consider physical therapy to help you decrease the pain and get you moving again.
Physical Therapy is a type of care provided by a person licensed to provide treatment.
A Physical Therapist (or Physiotherapist) uses a variety of techniques and tools to help your body heal, to get rid of pain, and to restore normal body movement and function.
How To Find The Right Physical Therapist
Finding (and choosing) the right therapist can be challenging. Here are some things to consider before moving forward:
1. Are they specialists in your kind of problem?
Make sure to find out if the Physical Therapist has experience and expertise with your problem. Some physical therapists specialize in conditions like strokes and head injuries. Others specialize in working with specific populations like athletes. While it might sound “cool” to go and see someone that works with professional athletes, unless you ARE a pro ball athlete – that therapist might not be the best fit for you. If you have been in a car accident and were injured, be sure your Physical Therapist has expertise in treating car accident injuries.
2. Do they accept your insurance?
You can generally call your insurance carrier (the info is on the back of your health insurance car) or go online to find out who’s nearby… But an easier way is to call the physical therapy office and ask them to check your benefits. For example, in our offices we’ll ask all of the right questions to find out what your benefits are and be able to tell you in plain (non-jargonny) English.
Did You Know
If you’ve been in a car accident, your car insurance may have medical care coverage included. In Colorado this is called “med-pay” and there’s a mandatory $5000 of medical coverage if you have been injured in a car accident.

3. When can you get in?
Some physical therapists have a waiting list and you might not be able to get in for an appointment for WEEKS.
Again – this might sound impressive (“Wow – they must be really good if they are THAT booked up!”)
But if you are hurt and need immediate help, their “fame” is of no benefit to you.
At our Arvada and Wheat Ridge clinics we can usually get you in for an appointment within 1 business day – sometimes sooner.
4. Where are they located relative to your home (or work)?
Let’s face it – you don’t want to have to travel an hour if there’s a great clinic 20 minutes (or less) away from your home or office.
So when you call, find out the location of the physical therapy office and ask them to provide directions.
